The same build-up problem as any other silo — with a product you are going to sell for people or animals to eat.
Grain, flour, sugar and feed all cake against a silo wall given time and humidity. What makes a food plant different is not the build-up — it is everything you are not allowed to do about it.
No washing down. No chemicals. No contamination of the product that comes out afterwards. And in most cases, no long shutdown either, because the intake does not stop for the harvest.
Why "just wash it out" is not an option. Water is what caused the caking in the first place. Introduce more and you set the next layer harder, and you create a residue problem in a vessel that has to stay food-grade. Everything we do here is dry.
Wall coating that thickens season after season, quietly taking storage capacity with it.
Fine powder that bridges over the outlet and rat-holes through the middle.
Hygroscopic, and it sets genuinely hard once it has taken up moisture.

Two methods, both dry, both worked from outside the vessel.
One tube, fifteen metres of wall. On one grain silo we cleared build-up standing 15 m high on the wall with a single Cardox tube. That is the sort of return that makes the method worth understanding before you plan a manual clean.
Everything we take off the wall leaves through your normal outlet, into your normal handling system. On food and feed materials that recovered stock is worth money — it is not a disposal cost, and there is no separate removal contract to negotiate.
Where material has genuinely spoiled, it is discharged the same way and segregated by your own crew. We do not decide what is fit to sell; we get it out of the vessel so somebody qualified can.
A grain silo is one of the most dangerous confined spaces in industry. Entrapment in flowing product, engulfment when a bridge collapses without warning, and an atmosphere nobody wants to breathe — the whole point of both systems is that the crew stays on the roof platform and the machine goes in alone.
